Rock Cycle Diagram

Looking for useful media to explain or learn about rock cycle? Well, using a rock cycle diagram can be a useful way to illustrate how the three main types of rock are related to one another and how changes to rocks happen in a recurring sequence is the rock cycle. The diagram is like the one below. Explore the diagram by rolling your mouse over the names of the rock types and clicking on the images.

As you have probably known, rocks are the most common material on Earth. They are naturally occurring aggregates of one or more minerals. Rock divisions occur in three major families based on how they formed: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each group contains a collection of rock types that differ from each other on the basis of the size, shape, and arrangement of mineral grains. Igneous rock can change into sedimentary rock or into metamorphic rock. Sedimentary rock can change into metamorphic rock or into igneous rock. Metamorphic rock can change into igneous or sedimentary rock. Igneous rock forms when magma cools and makes crystals.

As you can see in the images above, a rock cycle diagram shows relationships between geologic materials (rocks, sediment, magma, etc.) and processes (volcanism, weathering, melting, etc.). Materials are shown boxes with black backgrounds; processes in boxes with pink backgrounds. The arrows indicate the ways in which one material may be changed by a process into another material. For example, a metamorphic rock (a material) may be transformed into magma (another material) by melting (a process). More diagrams are presented in the following images.
