Phase Diagram for Water

Study the phase of water using the following phase diagram for water which will show you the examples of the phase diagram of water. You know water is a unique substance when solid water (ice) is less dense than liquid water just above the freezing point. The phase diagram for water is shown in the figure below. View the diagrams and learn about the phase in the following images.

Phase diagrams basically used to show the preferred physical states of matter at different thermodynamic variables, such as temperatures and pressure. Within each phase, the material is uniform with respect to its chemical composition and physical state. At typical temperatures and pressures on Earth water is a liquid, but it becomes solid if its temperature is lowered below 0 °C and gaseous if its temperature is raised above 100 °C, at the same pressure. Where three-phase lines join, there is a ‘triple point’, when three phases stably coexist but may abruptly and totally change into each other given a slight change in temperature or pressure. In the following phase diagram for water, you’ll learn how these changes happen.

In water’s diagram, the slope of the line between the solid and liquid states is negative rather than positive. The water molecules are actually closer together in the liquid phase than they are in the solid phase. When a solid is heated at constant pressure, it melts to form a liquid, which eventually boils to form a gas. These phase diagrams illustrate the variations between the states of matter of elements or compounds as they relate to pressure and temperatures. The following is some examples of a phase diagram for water.
